The Jesmond branch is planning to introduce Mexican breakfasts and brunches to the menu on top of the existing tacos on offer, opening earlier than the Byker branch.

Wass has ensured vegetarian and vegan options are available – they have even become some of the Byker branch’s best sellers.

Starting out as a food truck at Tynemouth market, Wass says Jesmond was an obvious destination for Chucho’s.

“Everyone was always saying, ‘You need to have a place in Jesmond’,” Wass said. “It’s easy saying that, but the reality of [making it happen] is really hard.

“It’s not something that you can jump into as a brand-new business. You need to work up to it, gradually.”

The restaurant is modelled with brightly coloured furniture, Mexican tiles and reclaimed wood, seating up to 22 people.

Tavizon and Wass began their business within the comfort of their own kitchen, catering for private parties before setting up the food truck.

Their unique selling point is in the authenticity of Mexican food, with recipes inspired by Tavizon’s family.

“Jesus lived in the UK for years and he had not eaten proper Mexican food for a long time – it was actually the first time that we went back to Mexico together that he realised he was missing authentic Mexican food. So we bought a tortilla machine and started making our own tortillas and asking Jesus’s mum about salsa recipes.”

“It’s very sociable, and informal. We have forks that people can use… but you’re not really supposed to! It’s meant to be messy, like in Mexico.”
