‘Stunning’ squash on display in Jesmond
Two of the best squash players in the world entertained a packed gallery in a thrilling exhibition match at the Northumberland Club last Friday (March 19th).
More than 100 people watched world number 4 James Willstrop (pictured) take on world number 29 Saurav Ghosal in a display of truly world class squash. The match was organised by Prince Racquets which sponsors both players.
Jim Douglas, general manager of the Northumberland Club, told JesmondLocal he was delighted to be hosting such a memorable event. He described the match as, “a stunning display of shot making, incredible recovery shots and magical racquet skills, the like of which has not been seen in the north east for many years”.
The match was keenly contested, with Willstrop finally triumphing in four games, 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 9-11.
Prior to the match, both players spent an hour coaching the Northumberland Club high performance junior squad. James Willstrop was impressed by the talented squad, and by one member in particular. He said Joe Waring, one of the club’s youngest players, had excellent court movement and racquet ability for a boy his age.
The players rounded off an unforgettable evening socialising in the bar and enjoying a well-earned curry. “Overall, it was a great night at the club,” said Douglas.
