Jesmond Joggers’ men secure promotion in cross country league
The Jesmond Joggers’ senior men secured their promotion into the second division of the Start Fitness North East Harrier League, after a tough last race at Prudhoe on March 23rd. Both the men and women put out strong teams, despite the gale force winds and freezing temperatures on the day.
In the senior and veterans men’s race Maurice Woodward finished in an impressive 49th position, Tim McGahey and Kevin Richardson behind in 109th and 111th, while David Coe, Ian McDonald and Christopher Alan Heaps all contributed to the Jesmond Joggers’ efforts, who finished second in division three on the day. These results then meant that both Jesmond Joggers RC and Jarrow & Hebburn AC finished on 13pts for the season, but although they secured promotion, the Joggers just missed out on winning the league in division three due to count back.
The Joggers’ women’s team also had a strong push for promotion with Una McNelis finishing 50th, Rachel Maloney finishing 57th and Alex Forde coming in 68th. Unfortunately this placed the Joggers’ senior women’s team in fourth position overall in the league. Despite not achieving promotion this season the women’s team has been strong throughout the season and has high hopes for next year’s league.
Club chairman Scott Armstrong told JesmondLocal after the race that “everyone turned up and braved the conditions today and have done the club proud this season.”
