Council tax rises and local services cut – Jesmond responds
In the face of reduced funding from central government, Newcastle City Council will slash its budget by £20m this year, and increase council taxes by nearly 4%, in a plan approved at the beginning of March. The council also intends to reduce public services, including library opening hours, as it tries to save another £60m by 2022. If the budget woes continue, other services might be on the line.
Reporters Jerry Chen and Andrew Paterson asked locals in Jesmond what they think of the council tax rise, and which services they would be the most upset to see cut.
