Who will get the Jesmond vote this election?
With candidate nominations now closed for next month’s general election, here’s a summary of the people seeking your vote on December 12 to represent Newcastle East, which includes Jesmond.
Labour – Nick Brown
Nick Brown is the incumbent MP for Newcastle East. He was first appointed in 1983 taking over from the previous Labour MP Mike Thomas. He has served most recently as Labour’s chief whip. Originally born in Kent, Brown studied at the university of Manchester. Upon graduating, he moved to Newcastle to work in the advertising department of Proctor and Gamble in 1974. He was elected as a councillor for Walker in 1980, until he was elected as the MP for Newcastle East three years later. He has consistently voted against the UK leaving the European Union.
Conservative – Robin Gwynn
Robin Gwynn is from Caterham in Surrey. He has served as the deputy chair of the East Surrey Conservative Association. In 2017, Gwynn ran as the Conservative candidate in the general election for the Jarrow constituency. He is in support of the UK leaving the European Union.
Liberal Democrats – Wendy Taylor
Wendy Taylor has been a Liberal Democrat Councillor for Dene Ward since 1988. She has ran in every general election since 2010 as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Newcastle East. Taylor came to Newcastle at the age of 18 to study medicine at Newcastle University. She currently works at Freeman Hospital as a breast cancer consultant. She is against the UK leaving the European Union.
Green – Nick Hartley
Nick Hartley currently lives in Byker and works as a clinical psychologist for the NHS. He is a campaigner for Psychologists Against Austerity North East. Hartley has previously ran as a Green party candidate in the local election for Byker.
The Brexit Party has not announced a candidate for Newcastle East.
