Tomahawk Takeaway and Waitrose have applied to Newcastle City Council to renew their licences to sell alcohol within their respective Acorn Road and Osborne Road units.

Both applications intend to renew their current allotted hours already granted by Newcastle City Council to sell alcohol on their premises.

“The application’s request for 7am-11pm hours licence to sell alcohol every day is the Little Waitrose’s Jesmond unit’s existent alcohol licensing hours,” Jessica Simms, partner and communications officer for Waitrose, told JesmondLocal. “There is no requested change to the hours.”

Tomahawk Takeaway told JesmondLocal that its application served to replace the alcohol sales licence given to Filmore & Union, which occupied its premises beforehand. “It’s nothing new really,” said a spokesperson for Tomahawk Takeaway.

The existent alcohol sales licence for Little Waitrose is longer than the unit’s opening hours, which are 7am-10pm on Mondays to Saturdays, and 11am-5pm on Sundays.

Tomahawk Takeaway is applying for a daily 11am-10pm alcohol sales licence, alongside a ‘Late Night Refreshment’ licence from 11pm-12am. Its unit opening hours run from 12pm-3pm and 5pm-10pm every day.

The Jesmond Residents’ Association support the move. A spokesperson told JesmondLocal: “We support local businesses wherever possible.

“Jesmond has many residents with a variety of views. If residents have any concerns, they can seek guidance and clarification of the applications from Anita Smith at the Licensing Department of Newcastle City Council.”

A Facebook user commented under a Jesmond Residents Association’s post regarding the applications: “Great news, hopefully we can fully support both of these applications to encourage the council to agree as well.”

“Jesmond residents really need to start getting behind local businesses. Acorn Road is at risk of becoming a desolate wasteland if not,” added another Facebook user.

A concern was raised about the Tomahawk Takeaway application on the Newcastle City Council website’s overview of it.

“While I welcome the fact that a previously empty unit is now being used, I am concerned that an increase in anti-social behaviour around Acorn Road could occur.

“Residents already put up with rowdy behaviour from customers leaving the Osborne Road bars and walking through Acorn Road on their way to West Jesmond Metro station.”

Waitrose’s application is pending decision, while Tomahawk Takeaway’s application is open for consultation, according to the Newcastle City Council website.
