Jesmond events cancelled due to Covid-19 outbreak

Like communities around the UK, Jesmond is seeing many events cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak as community-led organisations follow the advice from government urging people to socially distance themselves.

JesmondLocal has compiled the following list of cancelled and postponed events:

  1. 2020 Jesmond Community Festival has been cancelled.
  2. Jesmond Library: closed from 9am Tuesday 17th March.
  3. Jesmond Community Forum annual meeting.
  4. ‘Health, Social Care and the Community’ presentation
  5. Jesmond U3A: Meeting on Wednesday 18th March has been cancelled and future meetings postponed.
  6. Sing-along Film Club: King and I, at Holy Name Parish Hall on Thursday 19th March.
  7. Tyneside Chamber Orchestra at Jesmond URC: Sunday 22nd March.
  8. Sing and Socialise at St George’s Church hall
  9. Elders Council Event on Parks and Open Spaces on 18th March –postponed
  10. Sporting Memories Café at Northumberland Club – sessions suspended for the time being
  11. Exercise in the Community at Sandyford Court: sessions suspended
  12. North East Humanists – AGM on 19th March cancelled
  13. St George’s Church has suspended public worship in the Parish and Benefice

Just two weeks ago, St George’s Church was launching its first Open House Lunch as part of its Leading Your Church Into Growth Initiative (LYIG).

The initiative aimed to bring the community together no matter the age, race, gender, religion or ethnicity by offering a free lunch, every first Sunday of the month.

It was hoped that the initiative would help build stronger community relations with Jesmond residents.


As of 17th March, officials have confirmed 1,960 cases and 71 deaths in the UK as a result of coronavirus.
