Viewings of the brick and timber pavilions which once belonged to Brandling Park Bowling Club, currently up for rent, have been paused due to a higher-than-expected number of people expressing an interest in taking over the building.

The pause in viewings was revealed to JesmondLocal by estate agents George F. White, which is marketing the property

The brick pavilion is listed with a guide rent price of £5,000 per year, and the timber pavilion’s guide rent price is £2,750 a year.

Dhakshina Pandurangan, one of George F. White’s commercial surveyors, said that Urban Green Newcastle, a local charity set up in 2019 to help care for Newcastle’s most loved parks and allotments, is currently reviewing all interest in the property because of both the volume and variety of submissions.

The bowling club closed in 2017 after its membership fell to just 12 players. The club had been active continuously for 138 years.

Following the club’s closure, Urban Green Newcastle stepped in to manage the building. The non-profit organisation cares for 33 parks across the city and is perhaps most well-known for its work at Jesmond Dene.

Sally Vleugels, commercial manager at Urban Green Newcastle, said: “Reviving these buildings and inviting local businesses to become part of the Brandling Park community will be great for the local area.”

Vleugels added that whoever does take over the space “will no doubt add to the lovely neighbourhood feel in this part of the city”.

The goal of putting the bowling green buildings on the rental market is to rejuvenate the area, which has laid fallow in the years since the club’s closure. “By creating exciting new additions to Newcastle’s green spaces, we can encourage more people to visit them and enjoy them,” said Vleugels.

The decision to put these buildings on the market to let has sparked conversations among residents of the surrounding area.

Kieran Perera, who lives on Clayton Park Square, said: “It’s great that we know who is in charge of the project, and can trust them to provide the community with something new.”

Another resident on the same road, Akshay Mangarai, told JesmondLocal that his three-year-old brother enjoys walks around Jesmond Dene’s Pets Corner, which is also overseen in part by Urban Green Newcastle, and hopes the Brandling Park space can be turned into something “healthy and family friendly.”
