Jesmond gyms gear up for busiest time of year with New Year deals
Jesmond gyms and personal trainers are offering January deals, offers and new classes in an effort to ease financial challenges post-Christmas, and to capitalise on the New Year get fit drive.
Jesmond Pool and Gym, Tribal Cycle and GreenZone Gym will all offer something new for locals, encouraging the community to get healthy in the New Year, they tell JesmondLocal.
Gary Nash, owner and chief of Tribal Cycle, a spin studio based at the Northumberland Club, explained this January will be “mad busy as we have loads going on”.
Nash said: “We are offering a two month half-price membership to get people started in January and February, when we know people can feel the financial pinch due to Christmas overspends”.
Isabella Cipriano, a student at Newcastle University, has said she is excited for this offer giving her a “cheap excuse for me to get healthy somewhere local”.
On 13 January, Tribal Cycle will celebrate their first birthday with an all-day free ride “to mark an amazing first year of building our tribe”. The event will have a live DJ set as well as raffles and prizes. Although the event is free, donations are encouraged to Maggie’s centre in Newcastle which supports those living with cancer.
Craig Johnson, a manager and personal trainer at Jesmond Pool and Gym, said they will offer a “January deal for anyone on the fence about starting training”, joining Tribal Cycle in an effort to support the local community.
This is likely to be a block of five hour long one-to-one training sessions prices “way cheaper” than the normal rate in order to ease “tough” January finances, Johnson said. Prices are yet to be confirmed.
Jesmond Pool and Gym will also complete their ongoing two-year renovation this January with the addition of new gym equipment.
“We will be getting new weights, benches, squat racks, barbells, sand bags, kettlebells, smith machine and much more,” said Johnson. Having already replaced cardiovascular equipment and resistance machines, Johnson said a free weights area is also “soon to arrive”.
In October 2023 Steve Green took over from Sue Clark as the new owner of GreenZone Gym. Green told JesmondLocal that while there may not be explicit offers for newcomers, there are hopes for some new classes in the New Year.
From January, Green will be “starting to work with a very accomplished Masters swimmer”. He is looking to expand on that by offering “sessions for local Masters swimmers and triathletes” to support people who are interested in competitive and goal-specific training.
Green is also hoping to introduce a kettlebell class in the New Year.
“I already have a number of new clients lined up, so I suspect it’ll get busy – but if people are keen to get fit and healthy that has to be a good thing,” said Green.
Pinetree and BodyGuards will not offer any deals in the New Year. However, director of BodyGuards, Duncan Edwards, is excited to welcome new clients and help them get into a “healthier routine, lose weight and get fit for an upcoming skiing or snowboarding trip in the new year”.
