England women’s cricket star at free Jesmond coaching

International cricketer Danielle Hazell will be guest starring at Newcastle Cricket Club’s Open Day at the finale to the Jesmond Community Festival on Sunday.

Hazell has just flown back after a successful tour of India, when she was praised by captain Charlotte Edwards: “Dani Hazell has been a real find for us this trip. She has really taken her opportunity over the last year with the bat and the ball.”

Hazell said today: “I’m looking forward to seeing both girls and boys at the Open Day. Taking part in cricket coaching is great – you meet new friends, you’re out in the sun, you get out of the house. You don’t need to have done cricket before to enjoy it.”

She added: “India was my best tour yet – I’ve taken a few more wickets, taken a few more runs. I’ve learnt a lot – and India was wonderful as well, a brilliant experience.”

Free fun coaching is on offer at the Jesmond ground, when visitors can see for themselves why it has won the North East Premier League “Ground of the Year” award two years running.

Also on offer are activities indoors and out for all the family:

  • make jewellery and gift bags from magazines – reduce your carbon footprint
  • free aromatherapy massage
  • hit the stumps and win a prize
  • community choir performance

And there’s a chance to sample café refreshments and the expanded range of real ales.

Club chair Nick Humble said: “There’s a lot going on at the club – we’re very much at the heart of the community and welcome this chance to meet as many people as possible.”

Directions and more details are provided on the club’s website.
