Fun for Jesmond’s over-50s

As part of Jesmond Community Festival, Central Newcastle High Junior School and Newcastle’s Elders Council hosted an afternoon of fun and frivolity for the over-50s.

The two-hour event kicked off with a flawless vocal performance from Central High’s Year Six choir.  One guest remarked that it was “smashing” and “lovely to see young people getting involved in community activities” through their songs and choral speeches.

The afternoon then moved swiftly on to Circle Dancing with Liz Hammer, a leading circle dancer since 2000.  Although it was a new experience for many, Hammer’s expertise and enthusiasm ensured that everyone who joined in picked up the folk-based dances quickly and easily.

After the physical demands of circle-dancing a quick tea break was needed, accompanied by delicious cakes and biscuits kindly donated by Greggs bakery. They didn’t last long.

The final activity was a rafflle, while everyone finished off the quizzes they’d been working on throughout the afternoon. The success of the event was just reward for all the hard work put in by Bronwen Fitchett and her team. For more information on Circle Dancing you can phone Liz Hammer on 0191 2813927 or email lizhammer@talktalk.net
