Students lead Jesmond street tidy

Student organisers from Newcastle University Students’ Union led a Jesmond street tidy last week.

To help Jesmond residents, who organise regular litter picks with Keep Jesmond Clean, students turned out to do their bit.

The street tidy was held on the last day of term before students headed home for their Easter holidays.

Jack Taylor, President of Newcastle University Students’ Union, said that he “understands that students will have a lot of rubbish [and] there are a lot of parties going on at the end of term. It’s absolutely natural and normal for students to be doing so. To combat that and the extra mess we thought we would do this area in particular.”

Participants concentrated on Manor House Road and Queens Terrace, as well as the surrounding area.

NUSU Go Volunteer are also hosting another street tidy in Jesmond, and other student areas around Newcastle, at the end of next term when students will be leaving for summer break.

They plan to extend their litter picking to every day for two weeks. They will also be helping re-home students’ unwanted furniture and other household goods to try and decrease fly-tipping when students move out of their properties.
