The passenger of a white van involved in the crash on the Coast Road this week has died.
Michael Young, who lived in the Lobley Hill area of Gateshead, passed away in hospital as a result of his injuries. The 44-year old driver of the van is described by Northumbria Police as being in a stable condition.
The incident happened when the white van collided with a wall as it headed eastbound between Sandyford Road and the Cradlewell Bypass in the early hours of Monday morning (December 10th).
Emergency services that attended found two male occupants of the vehicle with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone who saw what happened is urged to contact police.
Sergeant Pinner Rana, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrols unit, said: “This is a really tragic case for everyone involved and it is incredibly sad that a man has lost his life.
“Our officers continue to support his family as they come to terms with what has happened while we try and establish exactly what has happened.
“We have a few reports of the vehicle in the surrounding area before the collision took place but we still need to speak to people who may have seen what happened.
“If anyone has dashboard camera footage of the vehicle in the minutes before the collision, or the crash itself, please come forward and speak to police.
“Anyone else who may have seen the vehicle is also encouragedt o contact police. Any information could be really helpful to the investigation.”
