Osborne Road restaurant Jam Jar will remain shut until tomorrow (Tuesday 11th February) following a fire on Saturday morning, when three fire engines were sent to put out the flames.

The fire occurred just a few doors up from Caledonian Hotel and its adjacent Billabong Bar, which also caught fire last October and which are still supported by metal scaffolding.

The Jam Jar fire is thought to have been less severe than the Caledonian Hotel fire. According to ChronicleLive, a spokesperson for the New George Hotel, of which Jam Jar is a part, said that “everything is fine, just a small fire”.

A spokesperson from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue said it received a call about the fire at 7:22am and sent three fire engines to put out the fire.

Hannah Graham, reporter for ChronicleLive, later tweeted at 9:43am that “a second, smaller fire crew” had arrived to support the fire services already present.

The Jam Jar premises were not cordoned off. “We’re just happy nobody got hurt and are focusing on getting rid of the smell,” said a Jam Jar employee.

A receptionist at the next-door Carlton Hotel said: “I did see a plume of smoke rising out of Jam Jar from the back of our premises. Other than that, I saw that the fire brigade were here for a while, and that was it.”

A spokesman for Jam Jar confirmed to JesmondLocal that the restaurant would be shut today (it is usually open on Mondays) but would reopen tomorrow.
