Jesmond Food Market has teamed up with local zero emissions delivery company ZMove to help traders lower their carbon emissions when moving stock and setting up stalls.

ZMove launched in March 2019 with an employed, trained rider team and a fleet of electric cargo bikes, initially serving Newcastle and Gateshead. It began its partnership with Jesmond Food Market in September and has been working with traders on the Saturday markets held so far in 2020.

“We’re delighted to support the food market, which is is one of Newcastle’s special retail communities, a stunning bike-friendly setting with local businesses making glorious products,” said director Nick Mason. “It’s exactly the type of enterprise we are here to help.”

Jesmond Food Market, which was set up in 2015 by Food Newcastle and Cook House restaurant owner Anna Hedworth, is now looking into the possibility of delivering food through via ZMove to shoppers who are unable to get to the market.

“Jesmond Food Market is meant to be a market for the entire area and we want the community to feel like they own it,” said Chris Jewitt, Food and Drink North East managing director, who is responsible for the market’s development. “We want to make it feel like they can come along and shop for an entire meal for an entire week. We work for the community and want to listen to what they want.”

Partnering with ZMove isn’t the only recent change: the market now opens two Saturdays a month. And this year, the market is also licensed to sell alcohol: it held its first beer and wine tasting in January. It also has plans to work with a range of organisations, such as food banks and other charities, to promote their values and services.

The next market will take place on Saturday 7th March as this coming Saturday’s market (15th February) has been cancelled due to Storm Dennis.
