Jesmond coronavirus volunteers praised by residents

While the impact of social isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic continues to deepen, we are hearing more positive stories of Jesmond’s community spirit.

The launch of Facebook group COVID-19 Mutual Aid (Jesmond) by resident Yvonne Wancke has seen the community connect and unite in supporting one another.

Since then similar groups have sprung up across Jesmond and the rest of the country.

What started as an online community support group has unravelled into an offline, life-changing reality for many residents living in Jesmond.

Emily Wallace, admin of Covid-19 Mutual Aid (Jesmond) was one of many to help the residents of Jesmond.

After posting leaflets through the doors of the community, she was welcomed with messages of gratitude and support.

“Dear Emily,
Thank you so much for your kind offer of help if needed. It’s amazing that you – whoever you are – have got together to be so generous and helpful. This strange time is bringing us together in lots of ways and showing us that we do have a good and strong community.”

“Dear Emily,
I hope you are as well as you can be in this tough time.
I wanted to send an email of thanks and gratitude, you posted a note through my front door. What you are doing and offering is extremely kind. Heroic.”

Wallace is just one of many Jesmond residents who has taken time to support the community.

Others have also shared the responses that they have received to spread some positivity during the crisis.
