Jesmond FC make history scoring six wins in a row

Local football team Jesmond FC have broken a club record, notching up half a dozen back-to-back victories for the first time in their history. The record-breaking achievement came after beating Cramlington Town 1-0 in the Second Division of the Northern Football Alliance League at the end of last month.

The feat follows some major setbacks earlier in the season. “We were docked three points and had a match result reversed because we fielded an ineligible player with 10 minutes to go,” said Charlie Young, treasurer and captain of Jesmond FC, who are also known by their nickname, “The Goats” and play their home matches at Northumbria University’s Coach Lane campus. “It was a bit of a kick in the teeth, as we were up against second in the league at that time.”

However, since then the team’s fortunes have improved. “The lads have hit the ground running and six wins in a row has been really good because we’ve managed to grind out some results,” said Young. “We drew three out of the first five games in the season, but recent results have been a lot better.”

When asked what has contributed to the change in the team’s performance, Young said one of the main factors in the team’s improved performance has been its defence, which has undergone significant changes over the season.

“Credit goes to our defence – if we look at the last six games, we’ve only conceded four goals which is great in such a high-scoring league. That’s something we’ve been working on.”

The Goats take a break from the league this weekend, as they host league leaders Haltwhistle in the semi-finals of the Minor Cup. Kick-off is at 1.30pm on Saturday at Coach Lane.
