Meeting the ghostly regulars of The Carriage pub

It is a part of Jesmond folklore that The Carriage pub on Archbold Terrace is haunted by a ghost — or three, depending on which stories you choose to believe.

Known today for its vegan-only food menu, The Carriage used to be a train station on the old Blyth & Tyne line. The station closed in 1978, making way for the opening of a Metro station on the north side of Jesmond Road. However the pub features relics of the old station, including the booth of the former ticket office.

JesmondLocal spoke to general manager Lee Shepherd about the pub’s haunted history. According to Shepherd, the phantom behind The Carriage’s best-known ghost story is George, who once worked on the railway but was hit by a train and is said to have haunted the pub with his extra-terrestrial presence ever since.

Shepherd also tells the lesser-known story of a man and woman who were killed in the blast of a bomb near the old railway station during the Second World War, and whose spirits continue to dwell in The Carriage.
