Jesmond event boosts university Movember campaign to raise over £26,000

This year, Newcastle University’s Movember campaign raised £26,638 for the charity, according to the organisation’s donation page on the uk.movember.com website.

In order to boost their profits, some of the students participating organised an event at Jesmond’s Holy Hobo in order to raise money for the charity and awareness for men’s mental health.

The event was held on 25th November at The Holy Hobo at Jesmond Three Sixty for the charity which was created to raise awareness and money for testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental health/suicide prevention.

At the event, there was an exclusive ‘Moustache Mule’ drink available to purchase, which cost £6, £1 of which was directly donated to the charity. Also, at the event there were QR code links around the venue in which people could scan and donate to the charity a price of their choice.

Harry Cleary is a Newcastle University student who has been the university Movember ambassador for two years. Cleary originally completed an internship with the charity over the summer and chose to carry on supporting the charity in the university term.

Cleary describes the internship as the “best and most rewarding experience of my life”.

Cleary said: “I, along with so many other men, struggle with my mental health on a daily basis and this is always my driving force when undertaking campaign work in November.”

When buying the special ‘Moustache Mule’ at the event, a false moustache was given with the drink. Many people were seen at the event with different coloured moustaches on.

Carra Greaves, a student at Newcastle University, attended the event after hearing that it was raising money for the charity. Greaves said: “I was going out tonight anyway but when I heard the event was here I wanted to come and help raise some money.”

Greaves was interviewed whilst wearing a bright pink fake moustache: “I bought one of the drinks which tasted great and now I’m happy because I have this moustache for the night.”

As well as the event at the Holy Hobo, Jesmond has also seen other Movember events held in the area, with several socials held on Osborne Road at places such as Bar Blanc.

Cleary said the campaign included more than 20 clubs and societies hosting their own events throughout Movember in Jesmond. Outside of Jesmond, the university group representing the charity also sold items of clothing to raise money on the Newcastle University campus.
