HYROX classes at Pinetree Fitness attract growing community of members
HYROX fitness classes at Jesmond Pinetree Fitness are seeing increasing demand, with many sessions often nearing capacity – far exceeding head coach Carl Robinson’s expectations, just a year after he introduced the workout.

Robinson brought HYROX to Jesmond last year after discovering the method himself. “When we first launched, I didn’t think many people had even heard of HYROX,” he told JesmondLocal. “But the response was incredible. We now have around 20 to 25 participants per class, and some sessions even have waiting lists of 10 to 15 people.”

HYROX started in Germany in 2017 and has since become a global fitness trend. It combines running with functional exercises such as sled pushes, rowing, burpees, and wall balls. Robinson says the mix of endurance and strength keeps members engaged. “People like that every workout feels different,” he said. “It’s enjoyable, challenging, and addictive.”
At Jesmond Pinetree Fitness, the gym offers two HYROX formats: HYROX HIIT, which focuses on high-intensity interval training, and HYROX Boxing, which blends functional fitness with boxing-style drills. Additionally, both classes mix running with strength and conditioning exercises, following the same structure as an official HYROX workout.
“HYROX doesn’t require a lot of skill. Anyone can join,” Robinson said. “It’s inclusive and gives people a sense of achievement, no matter their level.”
Isla Harper, 20, a regular participant, told JesmondLocal that she joined earlier this year and quickly saw why HYROX is so popular.
“At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Harper said. “But it’s become one of my favourite things. It’s tough, but in a good way. You push yourself, and the atmosphere is really encouraging.”
Another participant, Mateus Silva, 21, an international student from Brazil, said: “The first sessions were tough. But the coach helped me get the hang of it. Now I look forward to each class. It’s also fun to meet people from different places here.”
According to Robinson, HYROX helps participants improve both endurance and strength. It also builds camaraderie. “People progress quickly,” he said. “It’s results-driven. Members can see their performance improving week by week.”
As demand grows, Jesmond Pinetree Fitness plans to add more HYROX sessions, including workshops for beginners. This way, newcomers can try HYROX without pressure, while accommodating more participants.
Robinson said the rising demand for HYROX shows growing interest in functional and performance-based fitness. He expects class numbers and participation to keep increasing over the next year as more people look for structured, results-driven workouts.
