“We haven’t had a quiet day”: Jesmond shops report strong Christmas trading
Local retailers on Acorn Road in Jesmond say the Christmas period has brought a welcome boost in trade, with many describing the past few weeks as some of their busiest of the year.
At Oliver Bonas, staff say footfall has steadily increased as shoppers search for gifts. Store assistant Grace said business had “really picked up” in recent weeks, with the shop rarely seeing a quiet day. She explained that the store’s layout encourages customers to browse, often picking up multiple small gifts in one visit.
Independent shops are also feeling the benefits of the festive season. Katherine, owner of Gourmet Gifts, said November had been slow but that trading improved significantly once December began. She described the Christmas period as crucial for her business, adding that December accounts for much of her annual profit.
Festive displays have played a key role in attracting customers, with many shops investing in Christmas window decorations. Katherine also highlighted the growing popularity of Acorn Road as a retail destination, saying the increasing number of independent stores has helped draw more shoppers to the area.
At Dolly Dots, owner Jill described the Christmas period as “extremely important”, saying the shop had been consistently busy, adding: “We’ve been really busy – stock’s moving constantly.” She explained that preparation for Christmas often begins early in the year, with some products ordered almost a year in advance.
With festive decorations lining the street and a steady flow of shoppers, retailers on Acorn Road remain optimistic as they head into the final week before Christmas.
