Inside Jesmond’s largest running club: Jesmond Joggers
JesmondLocal looks at Jesmond Joggers, the largest running club in Jesmond, to see how it supports the local community.
Founded in 2006, Jesmond Joggers started as a small group of friends running together, and over the years it has grown into the largest running club in the area. It now attracts runners of all ages and abilities. Every week, members meet outside Jesmond Pool and run together around the local streets, parks and trails through Jesmond Dene.
Club secretary David Newman told JesmondLocal the club’s success comes from its inclusive approach. “We don’t pressure anyone,” he explained. “It’s all about support and enjoying running together.”
Members agree with Newman’s point. Emma Harrison, 22, who joined last spring, said, “I wanted more than just a place for running. I wanted a group where I could stay motivated and make friends.” Tom Hughes, 20, a student at Newcastle University, added, “The routes are beautiful and peaceful, and running here feels safe because almost everyone knows each other.”
Over the years, Jesmond Joggers has become a key part of local life, hosting charity runs and social events, helping members and local residents stay active while building friendships.
