£1.1m-worth of work by Northumbrian Water to reduce the likelihood of flooding for 26 Jesmond homes begins this weekend.

A six month programme of work in Jesmond to ensure homes in Burdon Terrace, Clayton Road, Eslington Terrace, Kingsland and Haldane Terrace are better protected against floodwaters starts on September 20th. A water main underneath Abbotsford Terrace will first be diverted.

Early next month, Northern Gas Networks and Seymour Civil Engineering Ltd, a company commissioned by Northumbrian Water to carry out the work, will lay sewer pipes and improve the gas mains underneath the same road.

Work will then begin on improving pipes Burdon Terrace, Clayton Road, Eslington Terrace, Kingsland and Haldane Terrace.

Traffic management measures and temporary or rolling road closures will occur as contractors carry out the maintenance work, and will help the flow of construction-related traffic to a temporary base Northumbrian Water will establish on Burdon Terrace, next to Tynemouth Nursery.

“Residents and commuters should be assured that we are working closely with Newcastle City Council to do all we can to keep disruption and inconvenience to a minimum,” said Mike Ciaraldi, Northumbrian Water’s project manager.

Ciaraldi told JesmondLocal that workers will “normally work a five-day week, 8am to 6pm, but there will be some exceptions throughout the project. Movement of large wagons will be restricted between 8am and 9am.

“In terms of the number of people working on the job, this will vary throughout the contract but my estimate is 10 to 12 people on average who will actually be on site.”

A community engagement session, to provide more information on the closures and to answer any residents’ questions or concerns, will be held tonight, September 18th, at Jesmond United Reformed Church on Burdon Terrace. Northumbrian Water representatives will be present from 6:30-8:30pm.
