Community orchard celebrates first birthday

Jesmond Community Orchard is celebrating its first year of achievements with an AGM and social event on Tuesday 22th June at 7.30pm in the British Legion Club on West Jesmond Avenue.

In that time the orchard has turned from a fantasy into a reality, with dozens of local families and individuals joining in planting and other activities. Apple Day in the autumn was fun for all age groups, and the Family Fun Day in March allowed children to use hammers and nails to make bird-boxes and scarecrows.

The AGM will provide an update on progress with an illustrated slide show, and will discuss plans and proposals for future developments and events.  Arrangements are already afoot for another Apple Day where members can bring along mystery apples from their gardens for identification by an expert, as well as taking part in more games, talks and demonstrations.

Anyone who wants to get involved or is just interested to find out what’s happening is welcome to come along next Tuesday.  There will be refreshments and a bar, and there is ample parking at the British Legion.

If you want to look in at the orchard it is situated in the north west corner of St Andrew’s Cemetery, Tankerville Terrace, Jesmond.
