Newcastle Cricket Club has been named cricket club of the year at the National Club Awards held in Manchester.

The Jesmond-based outfit was among thousands of clubs that entered into the awards, which were hosted last Saturday, 8th November, by celebrity sports presenter Chris Hollins.

Shortlisted for an impressive three awards – cricket club of the year, refurbishment of the year and marketing club of the year – both players and volunteers had high hopes from the start.

The success followed a great couple of weeks for the club, in which player Alex Nicholson was voted the North East Premier League player of the year, and the Osborne Avenue club pulled in 4000 people to watch its now annual firework celebrations.

Speaking about the achievements, co-chair Olwyn Hocking said: “Newcastle Cricket Club is delighted that all the hard work of its hundreds of volunteers has been recognised –especially in the 125th anniversary year for the historic Jesmond Ground.”
