Student orchestra and choir get Jesmond feeling festive

Newcastle Student orchestra and choir brought Christmas cheer to Jesmond last Sunday with their winter concert at St George’s Church.

The choir and orchestra consisted of students from all years of university with Newcastle University graduates Lydia Woods and Jake Hardiment conducting.

The concert included thirteen pieces of music with a “Winter finale” to finish.

Felicity Souter, a student at Newcastle University and member of the choir told JesmondLocal: “It was fantastic to have so many people attend; the festive feel was definitely in the air.”

The music was performed by soloists and sextets as well as the orchestra  accompanying the choir.

One concert-goer, student Phoebe Ho,  said: “The venue of the church made the concert so festive and the music was performed fantastically.”

“My favourite piece of the concert has to be the waltz from the “Sleeping Beauty” ballet, it was fantastic to see everyone getting involved and swaying,” she added.

The final song of the concert was written by conductor Jake Hardiment himself and consisted of a combination of Christmas carols “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Once in Royal David’s City.”

Souter paid tribute to the group’s commitment: “It is a lot of hard work but when everyone puts in so much effort it is so worth the outcome.”

The choir will perform again next year at St. Nicholas Cathedral for their spring concert.
