The Jesmond A netball team secured fourth place in division 4R of the Tyne and Wear winter league yesterday by beating the Riverside F team an impressive 24-12.

The game, which consisted of 4 twelve-minute quarters, took place at the Blue Flames Sports centre in Benton.

Jesmond were ahead form the start, going 4-0 up in the first quarter.

The quick pace continued and Riverside suffered an injury in the second quarter as their goal defence took a fall and had to leave the court.

With Riverside a player down, Jesmond were able to increase their lead to 15-6 by the third quarter when the injured GD returned to the court.

The final quarter saw Riverside battle hard to catch up, but in the closing minutes Jesmond scored with several impressive shots to secure their win.

Wing attack Laura Hanson said the team was “fired up” for the game, having been inspired watching team Northumbria beat favourites Loughborough in the Super League at Sports Central the previous night.

Despite the more than comfortable win, captain Laura Hunter insisted the team usually played much better and that this particular score line was low in comparison.

Finishing 4th in the winter league does not qualify the girls to be promoted from division 4R, but it stands them in good stead for the spring and summer league which starts in a few weeks time.
