Newcastle Cricket Club fireworks display postponed

Strong winds and heavy rain in Jesmond have caused the postponement of Newcastle Cricket Club’s annual fireworks display, which was due to start at 7pm on November 8th.

The announcement, on the cricket club’s Facebook page, came at 5:20pm. “It’s been a very difficult decision to make and we are extremely sorry for any inconvenience caused,” the cricket club said.

The display will be rearranged to a later date, the statement said, and tickets purchased for this evening’s display will still be valid. 4,000 people were expected at the event.

The fireworks display, which proves popular each year with residents, was instigated in 2011.

According to comments posted on the club’s Facebook page, a strong pickup in wind put paid to the display.

Many residents posted on Twitter today about their excitement to see the display, which attracts hundreds to the cricket ground.

Others have expressed disappointment at the decision, including on the Facebook page of Newcastle Cricket Club.

For those who will miss out on the fireworks this evening, JesmondLocal offers an alternative – albeit less impressive – alternative: a chance to relive the 2014 fireworks display:
