Northumberland Club under-9s lift division title

The Northumberland Club’s Under-9s mixed tennis team are looking forward to another year of success after winning the Division 2 title at the end of 2021.

A final three wins from their remaining three fixtures were enough to see the young tennis players crowned champions of their league. Comprised of three girls – Emilia, Olivia and Camille – and one boy, Alex, plus a couple of substitute players, the team showed lots of “dedication, determination and team spirit”, says captain and parent Nick Froom, as the youngsters played their way through one summer and two winter seasons.

“I was delighted,” said Froom. “In each fixture against different clubs, every player plays three matches and all four of our players won most of those matches, so it was nice to see them win a lot. But it was also nice to see them all get on. The head coach of the Northumberland Club was also pleased with the achievements.”

Froom says he hopes to encourage the children to keep getting outdoors and to eventually graduate to the adult section of the club. He says the club provides a good “platform” for the children to work their way through the age groups and develop their tennis skills, while enjoying their time together as a team.

The club holds junior tennis training sessions for children as young as just three-years-old. and under the supervision of head coach John Henderson, its timetable of tennis activities runs seven days a week
