Police urge Jesmond students not to risk rooftop sun-bathing

Northumbria Police have released a statement urging students in the Jesmond area not to gather on the roofs of their properties while enjoying the current spell of warm weather.

The statement comes after videos circulated on social media of students climbing onto roofs of terraced houses in Jesmond and Heaton, to drink alcohol and listen to music.

Students are sitting on terraced houses, like these on St. George’s Terrace, to enjoy the warm weather in Jesmond

The police are warning that many of the student properties are old – some dating back to the Edwardian era – and are not built to withstand groups of people.

Some houses, like this one, have properly constructed roof terraces… but many have not

They also say that anyone climbing rooftops, whilst drinking, is putting themselves in serious danger of falling as many roofs do not have safety barriers.
